(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Frontiers of Freedom Institute president George
Landrith today released the following statement on the pending battle on the
floor of the United States Senate regarding the nomination of Miguel Estrada
to the Washington D.C. Circuit Court:
"Later today Democrats will meet in a dark room in the belly of the United
States Capitol and vote on whether or not to go 'DEFCON 1' on the nomination
of the first Hispanic to the prestigious D.C. Circuit Court. Rumors persist
that Senate Dems are poised to launch the first ever filibuster against a
nominee to a lower-court. It would be unprecedented act of prejudice and
malice towards a man deserving nothing more or less than a full Senate vote.
"Now sadly, Hispanics across the country are now forced to ask whether the
delay in voting is not really about qualifications or ideology, but about
race.
"Let there be no doubt that Miguel Estrada is the ideal candidate for this
job. The Founders dreamt of candidates for the bench like this. But the
abuse of the precious checks and balances framed into our national
government would be their worst nightmare.
"Democrats have invented, perfected, and marketed a 'Stall and Smear'
campaign since the day President Bush announced his nomination of Mr.
Estrada. While a candidate praised by former employers and rated
'highly-qualified' by the liberal American Bar Association twisted in the
wind, Senate Dems sat on appropriations bills, homeland security
legislation, and an economic stimulus package. They waited more than 500
days to give this man a hearing and now claim to need more time. Democrats
priorities are shameful, pitiful, a real disgrace to the U.S. Senate.
"Fifty one principled Senate Republicans must stand together at the front
line and battle Tom Daschle and his henchmen one-by-one. If Republicans
cannot draw the line on what conduct is acceptable from a United States
Senator then no one can. Now is their time to shine. Stay and fight, every
single one of you. Fight not only for Miguel Estrada but for Lady Justice
herself. The voters in your states expect nothing less."
