Sixth Debate in Series To Take Place on March 14th in New York City

    NEW YORK, March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2 US),

an Oxford-style three-on-three debating series sponsored by The Rosenkranz

Foundation, today announced the panel for its Wednesday, March 14th debate

on the motion "Global Warming Is Not a Crisis" at Asia Society and Museum

in New York City.

This is the sixth debate in the IQ2 US inaugural series, which is

designed to raise the level of public discussion about pressing and

controversial issues.

"Global warming has become an increasingly divisive, rancorous issue,"

said Robert Rosenkranz, chairman of The Rosenkranz Foundation. "We believe,

however, it is possible to have a meaningful debate on this topic that

respects the views of both sides and provides a general audience with a

better understanding of the public policy implications."

Brian Lehrer, host of the Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC(R) New York Public

Radio and an award-winning author and documentary producer, will moderate

the debate.

Speakers in favor of the motion:

--  Michael Crichton, best known as author of Jurassic Park, the recent

State of Fear and the creator of "E.R.", Crichton received an M.D.

from Harvard Medical School and has been a visiting instructor at MIT

        and Cambridge University.

--  Richard S. Lindzen, the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Atmospheric

Sciences at MIT since 1983 and an award-winning member of the National

Academy of Sciences. Lindzen currently researches climate sensitivity,

atmospheric convection and the general circulation of the atmosphere.

--  Philip Stott, an Emeritus Professor and biogeographer from the

University of London, UK. Scott was editor of the internationally

important Journal of Biogeography for 18 years and writes regularly on

environmental issues for The Times of London, among other

        publications.

    Speakers against the motion:

--  Brenda Ekwurzel, works on the national climate program at the Union of

Concerned Scientists (UCS).  Ekwurzel completed doctorate research at

Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and

post-doctoral research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in

        California.

--  Gavin Schmidt, a climate scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for

Space Studies in New York and a contributing editor at

        RealClimate.org.

--  Richard C.J. Somerville, a Distinguished Professor at Scripps

Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego and

author of the popular book, The Forgiving Air: Understanding

        Environmental Change.

As is customary at IQ2 US debates, audience members will be asked to

vote on the motion before and after the debate. One side is deemed the

winner based on the final audience vote. The comparison of the initial vote

before the debate and the final vote shows the audience and panelists how

far the audience was swayed by their arguments.

Other IQ2 US debates slated for the 2007 spring season include "Better

More Domestic Surveillance Than Another 9/11" (April 18th) and "Beware the

Dragon: A Booming China Spells Trouble for America" (May 16th). Topics for

the fall 2007 and spring 2008 series will be announced shortly with tickets
