PETA says kill cows to save the planet

Issue: In a letter to Al Gore, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA) thanked him for his work in saving the planet but told him 'the
quickest and most effective way to fight climate change will come through
diet change." PETA pointed out the U.N report (that we told you about last
December) stated that animals raised for food (such as cows) produce more
greenhouse gases than all the cars, planes and trucks in the world produce.
This implies, of course, that existing herds of cattle will have to be
killed.

PETA went on to say, "According to a recent University of Chicago study,
switching to a vegan diet is more effective in countering global warming
than switching from a standard American car to a Prius" and finished by
telling Gore "you just can't be a meat-eating environmentalist."

Comment 1: I can't wait to see if all the other so-called environmentalists
heed PETA's call to become vegans.

Comment 2:  I totally agree with PETA ‹ if you are really true to your word
about saving the animals, you should not be eating meat or even using
leather belts, shoes and purses (men are given a "bye" on the purses.) Let's
see them "walk the walk" on this issue.

Background and links: The report says it's not only the " wind and manure"
from the 1.5 billion cows in the world that cause a problem but burning fuel
to make fertilizer to grow their feed produces CO2, a greenhouse gas. As
well, livestock emit "more than two-thirds of the world's emissions of
ammonia, one of the main causes of acid rain." Then there's the amount of
water the cattle consume, the waste they produce and the deforestation in
some parts of the world to provide grazing.   Access the full report at:
